Baseball Rules for Beginners: The Game in Plain Language

Two teams alternate batting and fielding. The batting team tries to score by advancing around four bases; the fielding team tries to record outs. Three outs end a half-inning.
Innings and outs
An inning has two halves, one for each team to bat. In standard baseball, the fielding team needs three outs to end the opponent’s turn at bat.
How runs score
A run normally scores when a runner legally touches first, second, third and home plate before the third out, subject to play-specific rules.
Fair and foul
Fair territory sits between the foul lines extending from home plate. A ball’s status depends on where it lands or is touched under baseball rules.
Common outs
Strikeouts, caught fly balls, force outs and tags are the most common beginner concepts. Many rules become easier once you understand when a runner is forced to advance.
Youth rule modifications
Youth leagues often modify pitching, base-running, inning limits or game length by age. Local league rules override a generic beginner explanation for actual games.
