Quick answer

A youth catcher first needs safe receiving habits, confidence around the plate and the ability to organize the defense. Pop time is not the first priority.

Receive safely and quietly

Build a stable stance, present a target, keep the glove relaxed and learn to catch without unnecessary body movement. Protective equipment must fit correctly and league rules should be followed.

Blocking

Blocking is about keeping the ball in front, not catching every pitch. Start with soft balls and predictable locations before adding game speed.

Throwing

Exchange cleanly, organize the feet and make an accurate throw. Young catchers gain more from repeatable transfers than from rushing for a stopwatch number.

Catching and pitching workload

Players who both catch and pitch can accumulate substantial throwing stress. Families should coordinate usage across positions and teams and follow current official restrictions.
