Fielding Fundamentals for Youth Baseball Players
Learn ready position, ground-ball footwork, glove work, throwing transitions and decision-making for young baseball players.
Fielding is a sequence: get ready, read the ball, move the feet, secure it, then make the correct throw. Clean decisions matter as much as clean glove work.
Ready position and first move
A fielder should be athletic before contact rather than reacting from a static posture. The first useful skill is learning to move in the correct direction as the ball comes off the bat.
Ground-ball fundamentals
Whenever time permits, get the body into a strong fielding position, work from the ground up, receive the ball out front and move through the play toward the throw. Different hops require adjustment; players should learn to avoid assuming every ground ball behaves the same way.
Catch-to-throw transition
After securing the ball, organize the feet before rushing the arm. Young players often lose accuracy because they try to throw before their body is ready.
Know where the play is
Fielding practice should include decisions: force or tag? Which base? Is there time for the lead runner? Should the player eat the ball? Baseball IQ turns a fielding skill into a game skill.
